In this verse in Matthew 4:4, JESUS was
being tempted by Satan while He was fasting for forty days and forty nights in
the wilderness. Satan tested JESUS that if He is hungry and if He is the real
Son of GOD, He should turn the stones into bread. But JESUS replied that man
shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of
GOD.
What did JESUS mean by His reply? He
wants to convey that we cannot live by merely eating. There is more to life
than food and material things. He emphasized that we also need to feed our mind
and spirit with Spiritual food. And, that Spiritual food is God's Word or God's
commands and laws written in the Bible. We should fill our minds and hearts
with God's Word found in the Bible in order for us to truly live. Every
decision and move we make should be based on God's will. God's will means God's
commands. We should always make sure that every decision will please and bring
glory to CHRIST (Isaiah 43:7).
Like JESUS, our top priority would be to
follow God's commands rather than satisfying our stomach. Consider this, JESUS
was in the wilderness to fast and that was His purpose that time. Remember when
JESUS said in John 4:34, "My food," said JESUS "is to do the will of
Him who sent me and to finish His work.” So we should make following God’s will
our food too. Food means one of our important needs. We should consider God’s
will as our important need to live a healthy and fulfilled life. We should do
what God requires of us. We should align our priorities with God's will.
So, it is important
to read our Bible night and day (Joshua 1:9) for it is the guide to life and
the Words in it are Spirit and life (John 6:63). We should also apply what we
have read in the Bible to our daily lives especially when responding to a
specific situation and making decisions. Moreover, we should listen to our
Pastor's sermon every Sunday for faith comes by hearing God's word. Upon
knowing this, we should obey what we have heard and read. God bless! I love you
with the love of the LORD.
