We are all called to be like CHRIST and follow Him (1 John 2:6). If you are seeking to know, understand and follow JESUS, you might ask yourself what are His characteristics? Listed below are the 10 main characteristics of JESUS that we should follow:
1. JESUS is good and loving.
JESUS is perfect and good (Nahum 1:7). He is a kind and sympathetic GOD. He loves us so much that He purchased us and save us from sin with His own blood (Acts 20:28). It is written in 1 John 4:8 that JESUS is love. It means He is full of love and it is His very nature to be a loving GOD. There is no greater love than the love of JESUS for us that He laid down his life for our salvation. And, that we just have to accept the gift of salvation and believe in JESUS’ finished work on the cross. JESUS even sent his Holy Spirit to us to transform us and make us new in love.
2. JESUS is humble and gentle.
JESUS humbled himself and took the nature of a servant. Consider this verse in Philippians 2:5-7, “5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a]6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[c] being born in the likeness of men. JESUS came here on earth not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). He even washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:3-7). It is also written in Matthew 11:29 that JESUS is humble. Here is the verse: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” JESUS in that above-mentioned verse is offering himself and His precious time to us even though He IS GOD. JESUS is teaching us in Philippians 2:3 to consider others better than ourselves. Check this verse. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves.” So, like CHRIST, we should also be humble and follow what He did. We should esteem others better than ourselves and serve or help them.
3. JESUS is caring.
JESUS cares for us. He says in 1 Peter 5:7 that we should cast all our cares, worries, and anxieties for He cares for us. He cares for our salvation that is why He came to earth to preach the gospel and teach us how to live a righteous life.
4. JESUS is helpful.
JESUS is a helpful GOD. He helps by healing the sick and restoring the handicapped, giving sight to the blind, providing food for the crowd, leading the people back to GOD through His sermon, teaches us to have the knowledge of the truth and gives us wisdom. He helps us by pointing us to the light and guiding us to the path of righteousness. He also hears and answers our prayers and petitions.
5. JESUS is kind.
JESUS was kind to Adam and Eve that even if they have sinned, He still made clothes out of animal skin for them to wear (Genesis 3:21). He also demonstrates his kindness to us by saving us and giving us eternal life (John 3:16). Not just that, He also saved and freed our ancestors from slavery in Egypt and give them the Promised Land. He also chose and called us into a wonderful life in heaven with Him. And for us who received Him and believed in Him as our God and Savior, He gives us a new soft heart that is filled with compassion and great love to serve Him and others. He also renews our spirit and provides us with strength. He answers our prayers and protects us from all harm. He as well gives us the Comforter, the Holy Spirit to guide us. Much more is, He gives us preachers, evangelists, and missionaries who can lead us to Him and help increase our knowledge of Him and advance our faith in Him. He gives us joy (John 15:11) and peace too (John 14:27).
6. JESUS is courageous.
JESUS was courageous during His walk here on earth. Even though He was still young at the age of 12, JESUS courageously went to the temple and talk with the leaders and they were amazed at JESUS wit and courage (Luke 2:41-47). Also, during JESUS’ ministry, He fearlessly preached the gospel without any fear of correcting the so-called godly leaders from misleading the people of their false teaching (Matthew 33: 13-36). He was also courageous in facing His suffering and death on the cross (Mark 14:62).
7. JESUS is selfless.
JESUS is selfless and unselfish. He doesn’t only think of Himself but He constantly thinks of us and our well-being. He sacrificed Himself for us to be saved by dying on the cross. He gave up His eternal riches in heaven and became poor for us to become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).
8. JESUS is forgiving.
JESUS is a forgiving GOD. He forgave the paralyzed man lying on a mat (Matthew 9:2). It is said in 1 John 1:9 that we confess our sins; He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. JESUS proved His forgiving character by forgiving the Israelites from their sins. Many times did the Israelites sinned by worshipping idols, but JESUS caused them to repent and He forgave them.
9. JESUS is compassionate.
This verse in Mark 6:34 state that JESUS is compassionate. Here is the verse, “When he (JESUS) went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.” This only shows that JESUS pities the pitiful, the hurting, the hopeless, the helpless, the poor, the homeless, the needy and us sinners. This verse in Matthew 15:32 also proves JESUS as a compassionate God, “And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way." JESUS fed the hungry and even until now He continuously provides and satisfies the hungry in so many ways. Here is another verse that says JESUS is compassionate - Psalm 145:8, “The LORD is gracious and compassionate; slow to anger and rich in love.”
10. JESUS is merciful.
JESUS is a merciful GOD. He even showed mercy to the woman who was caught committing adultery. He did not condemn her but He forgave her instead (John 8:3-11). Here’s another verse that reveals JESUS is merciful Isaiah 61:1-2, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn.” In this verse, JESUS tells us that He is merciful to everyone and that we can come to Him whenever we are facing great trials and challenges in life.
To sum this up, JESUS is like honey sweet and tasty because of His very loving nature. He is good, loving, humble, gentle, obedient, submissive, helpful, kind, courageous, selfless, forgiving, compassionate, and merciful. Oh, what a lovable GOD! With all these being said, we can have a hope that we have someone to rely on whenever we feel alone and rejected. We can just come to JESUS and we will receive everything that we ask from Him because He is a loving God. In Him, we can have a loving friend whom we can trust and love all the time. Since we are called to be Christ-like, we should imitate and follow his good and admirable characteristics so we may live with Him eternally in heaven. God bless you. I love you with the love of the LORD.
